On March 7, 2025, the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) announced a groundbreaking initiative in collaboration with its global partner, the Public Investment Fund (PIF). The newly established PIF WTA Maternity Fund will provide eligible WTA players with up to 12 months of paid leave and comprehensive maternity benefits.

For female athletes, balancing a professional tennis career with family planning has always been a significant challenge. To promote the growth of women's professional tennis, encourage more women worldwide to pursue the sport, and address the challenges faced by female athletes, WTA has introduced this maternity fund, benefiting over 320 eligible players.

Supporting Athletes Beyond the Court

Motherhood in professional tennis has long been a topic of discussion on the WTA Tour, with several high-profile players returning to competition after giving birth.

Former Grand Slam champion Victoria Azarenka, who successfully resumed her career after having her son, Leo, praised the initiative:
"This is a meaningful step forward. It represents a shift in how we support female tennis players, making it easier for them to balance their careers and family lives. I look forward to seeing its long-term impact on the sport."

Swiss star Belinda Bencic also expressed her support:
"This is great news, especially for lower-ranked players who want to start a family and return to competition. Many struggle financially during their time away from the tour, and this initiative will help them stay in the game."

Strengthening the Path to Comeback

This is not the first step WTA has taken to support returning mothers. In 2019, WTA introduced protected rankings, allowing new mothers to use their previous ranking to enter up to 12 tournaments within three years of childbirth. So far, 50 players have benefited from this policy.

With initiatives like the PIF WTA Maternity Fund, WTA continues to break barriers, ensuring that female tennis players can pursue both professional success and personal fulfillment.
